Dhaliwal announces a Dredging Project at the Ste-Marie-sur-Mer fishing harbour in New Brunswick

June 7, 2000

MONCTON - The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today that the federal government will undertake a dredging project at the Ste-Marie-sur-Mer fishing harbour in New Brunswick.

"Ste-Marie-sur-Mer is a busy fishing harbour that contributes greatly to the local economy. The entrance channel will be dredged in order to provide safe navigational access into the harbour and to the fishing grounds," said Mr. Dhaliwal. "Some emergency dredging has already been undertaken at this harbour. With the completion of this new project, fishers will be provided with safe access to their harbours."

This dredging project is being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours Program, in close collaboration with the Administration portuaire de Ste-Marie-St-Raphael who manages and operates this harbour for the benefit of local users. It is this close cooperation with clients that enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fisheries.
