MCGUIRE ANNOUNCES $263,000 INVESTMENT FOR HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS AT FOUR FISHING HARBOURS IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

July 18, 2000

SUMMERSIDE – Joe McGuire, Member of Parliament for Egmont, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest $263,000 in projects at the fishing harbours of Miminegash, Seacow Pond, West Point, and Egmont Bay (Abrams Village) in Prince Edward Island.

At Miminegash, the south-east section of wharf will be reconstructed. This will be an important step in ensuring safe and efficient operations at this harbour.

At Seacow Pond, additional berthage space will be provided by installing three new floating docks.

At West Point, new fenders and wheelguards will be installed on the wharf next to the slip. In addition, a new floating dock will be installed.

At Egmont Bay (Abrams Village), repairs will be undertaken to the main wharf.

"Harbours need consistent maintenance for their safe and efficient operation," said Mr. McGuire. "These projects underline the federal government’s determination to maintain viable and safe harbours in support of Prince Edward Island’s fishing community."

These projects are being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours Program, in close collaboration with the Harbour Authorities who manage and operate these facilities for the benefit of local users. It is this close cooperation with clients that enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fisheries.
