DHALIWAL ANNOUNCES $500,000 FOR WHARF IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
AT TWO NOVA SCOTIA FISHING HARBOURS
July 24, 2000
CHETICAMP -- The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and
Oceans, announced today $500,000 for wharf improvement projects at the fishing
harbours of Cheticamp (La Digue) and Ingonish (MacLeod’s Point), Nova Scotia.
"Preliminary engineering work is well underway and it is anticipated
that construction will commence this fall," stated Mr. Dhaliwal. "With
the completion of these projects, the fishers will be provided with much
improved facilities from which to operate. These projects underline the federal
government’s commitment to maintaining viable and safe harbours in support of
Nova Scotia’s marine community."
At Cheticamp (La Digue), the project consists of major repairs to a
45-metre section of steel sheet pile wharf structure, which is presently in a
severely deteriorated condition. This will involve new steel sheet piling as
well as the installation of a new reinforced concrete cope wall and deck system.
The project at Ingonish (MacLeod’s Point) involves the construction
of a 35-metre long rubblemound breakwater extension and repairs to the existing
breakwater.
These projects are being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans, Small Craft Harbours Program, in close collaboration with the Harbour
Authorities who manage and operate these facilities for the benefit of local
users. It is this close cooperation with clients that enables the federal
government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities
throughout Canada in support of commercial fisheries.
