MCLELLAN ANNOUNCES HARBOUR REPAIRS AT CANYON
CREEK IN ALBERTA
August 3, 2000
EDMONTON
– The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of
Canada and Member of Parliament for Edmonton West, announced today on behalf of
the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the
Government of Canada will undertake repairs to the Canyon Creek harbour on
Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta.
The Canyon Creek harbour provides launching and berthing facilities
for 20 - 25 commercial fishers and other boaters. This project involves
replacing the anchor and tie back system to prevent the steel sheet pile wall
from collapsing. These repairs will be undertaken during the fall and winter of
2000/2001.
"This project reflects our commitment to providing a network of safe and
efficient harbours across Canada to enable commercial fishers to pursue their
livelihood," noted Ms. McLellan.
This project is being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans,
Small Craft Harbours Program, in collaboration with the Canyon Creek Harbour
Authority Inc., which manages and operates the harbour for the benefit of local
users. It is this close co-operation which enables the federal government to
continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout
Canada in support of commercial fishing.
