Nanaimo, B.C. – Fisheries and Oceans Canada would like to notify the public of a new bivalve molluscs harvesting closure in a portion of the Strait of Georgia (Area 17). This closure is a result of contamination that may be from either sewage or agricultural run-off. Effective April 20, 2001, approximately 1.2 nautical miles of beach front in the Lantzville area (Nanoose Harbour) in Area 17 is closed to the harvest of all bivalve molluscs. The closed area is marked by boundary signs. This closure effects all harvesters (First Nations, commercial and recreational) and is based on recommendations from Environment Canada. This bivalve molluscs harvesting closure is in effect until further notice. Bivalve molluscs are shellfish with two shells, such as oysters, mussles, clams and cockles. Fisheries and Oceans Canada would like to remind the public that it is illegal to harvest shellfish from contaminated areas. Eating contaminated shellfish can cause serious illness. -30-
