Vancouver – The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and MP for Vancouver South-Burnaby, has announced new appointments and re-appointments to the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC). Among the eight appointees, five have been re-appointed and three are new members. Mary Sue Atkinson, Mark Angelo, Paul Leblond, Murray Chatwin and Carl Walters will be serving another term on the Council until May 31, 2002. Marcel Sheperd, Jeffrey Burton Marliave and Merril Fearon will be on the Council for the first time. Their terms began in January 1, 2001 and will come to an end on May 31, 2003. "I am pleased to welcome both the newly appointed and returning members to the PFRCC. Their commitment to conserving salmon on the Pacific Coast is invaluable to my Department," said Mr. Dhaliwal. "I am confident that through their expertise and dedication, each of the appointed members will contribute greatly to the success of the Council." The PFRCC is an independent body that provides advice to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, the British Columbia Minister of Fisheries and the public about the conservation of Pacific salmon populations and the status of their freshwater and ocean habitat in British Columbia. The council provides strategic advice about stock conservation and habitat restoration while also keeping alert and providing warnings about issues that threaten the objectives for conservation. -30-
