VANCOUVER – The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and MP for Vancouver South-Burnaby, today announced $6.1 million for the Small Craft Harbours Program in British Columbia. Several small craft harbours throughout B.C. will receive approximately $3.3 million for various projects including wharf, dolphin and float repairs, breakwater repairs and reconstruction, dredging, building repairs, environmental and fire safety initiatives as well as the provision of sanitary services. In addition, approximately $1 million will be invested in the geographical areas of Central Coast, South Coast, Lower Fraser River and North Coast to carry out minor works at several harbours. The remainder of the funds, $1.8 million, will be used for delivery and implementation of projects, as well as support for local Harbour Authorities in harbour management. "I am proud to announce $6.1 million in funding for small craft harbour projects in British Columbia. These projects underline the Government of Canada’s commitment to the province’s coastal communities," Mr. Dhaliwal said. "These funds are part of a continuing process of collaboration with Harbour Authorities and harbour users to help ensure that harbours are operating and in good repair, to reduce potentially unsafe conditions, and to address environmental issues." The projects are carried out under the Fisheries and Oceans’ Small Craft Harbours Program in collaboration with those Harbour Authorities that manage and operate facilities for the benefit of local users. This cooperation enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishing and resident coastal communities. - 30 -
