WEST COAST OF VANCOUVER ISLAND AQUATIC MANAGEMENT BOARD MAKES CALL FOR NON-GOVERNMENT BOARD MEMBERS

Port Alberni, B.C.Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Government of British Columbia, Nuu-chah-nulth and local governments of the West Coast of Vancouver Island (WCVI) announced today a call for applicants for non-government board members on the WCVI Aquatic Management Board.

The WCVI Aquatic Management Board is a new forum for individuals and organizations to participate in the integrated management of aquatic resources. The federal, provincial, Nuu-chah-nulth and local governments have jointly established the Board as a three-year pilot project on area-based, principle-driven management. The Board will develop and implement innovative, balanced, and practical solutions to aquatic management challenges in areas of fisheries and integrated oceans management, stewardship, aquaculture and community economic development. The Board will develop recommendations for managing aquatic resources in the area. These recommendations will then be presented to the appropriate statutory authority for their consideration.

The Board will consist of eight government and eight non-government members. Government members will include two representatives each from the federal, provincial, regional and Nuu-chah-nulth governments.

Non-government board members will broadly represent the diverse geography and range of aquatic resource interests in the management area, including commercial harvesting, Aboriginal harvesting, recreational harvesting, processing, environment / stewardship, aquaculture, tourism and labour. Board members will not be selected to represent individual organizations or groups. Instead, they will be appointed on the basis of: commitment to the Board’s vision, purpose, principles and objectives; skills, knowledge and experience relating to aquatic management issues in the management area; and base of support.

A selection committee will review applications and make consensus recommendations to governments based on merit, the overall balance of the Board, and each applicant’s demonstrated broad base of support.

The deadline for submitting application documents is December 10, 2001. Further information, including the Board’s Terms of Reference, background information for applicants, Board information and application forms can be found at:
