THE 2001 GROUNDFISH RECREATIONAL FISHERY IN THE SOUTHERN GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE (4T)

Moncton - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Gulf Region, today announced the details of the 2001 Recreational Groundfish Fishery for the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (4T).

DFO is seeking the public and boaters support to ensure a safe and sustainable recreational groundfish fishery. Observing the following management measures will contribute to the groundfish conservation program and ensure that the recreational fishery remains open.

Management measures:

  • Fishing season: The recreational fishery will begin on Monday, June 18, 2001, and will end on Friday, September 7, 2001.
  • It is illegal to retain any Atlantic halibut.
  • Never exceed the combined daily limit of five (5) groundfish - no Atlantic halibut.
  • Avoid fishing on Miscou Bank; this area is closed to fishing.

Boat operators and owners can also contribute to conservation.

  • The catches are not to exceed the daily limit.
  • Avoid taking on extra passengers or making extra trips to increase catches.
  • Identify catches - it is illegal to fillet fish at sea.
