The Canadian seal hunt is a sustainable, economically
viable activity based on sound conservation principles. Fisheries and Oceans
Canada (DFO), the federal department responsible for managing the seal hunt,
introduced a three-year management plan in 2003.
DFO sets quotas at levels that ensure the health and
abundance of seal herds. Many factors are considered in establishing quotas.
The Government of Canada respects an individual’s choice to support or oppose
the seal hunt. We encourage people to form their opinions based on the facts.
