Northern Access Initiative

november 24,  2005

On November 24, Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced DFO’s participation in a multi-departmental initiative to invest $238 million in Labrador. Joining Minister Regan in the announcement in Goose Bay, Labrador were Bill Graham, Minister of National Defence, and Joseph McGuire, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

DFO’s role in the announcement – the $96-million Northern Access Initiative – will help Canada enhance its sovereignty, fill security gaps and meet our objectives in terms of conservation and protection of fisheries resources. The program will create 70 new jobs in Fisheries and Oceans Canada through three core elements: increased air surveillance, an enhanced Coast Guard presence, and the opportunity for hydrographers to chart the coastal waters of Labrador and map its sea bed.
