SWOT Analysis

SWOT is an acronym for "Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats". A SWOT analysis should be a part of the beginning of any marketing plan. The first of the following links will take you to a rather lengthy, but useful, pdf file on how to conduct a SWOT analysis. The second link provides a brief outline of what a SWOT entails and how you go about conducting such an analysis.

Tourism Business Fact Sheets

The Department of Tourism & Culture, Government of Yukon, has a very informative web site that includes several fact sheets on getting started in the tourism industry. Many of the fact sheets refer to adventure and outdoor tourism, but will be helpful to any newcomer to all sectors of the tourism industry.

Fact Sheet on Creating a Business Plan

Community and Economic Development

This web page, hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has several useful tools for tourism and community development including "Assessing and Developing Tourism Resources" and the "Tourism Capacity Index".


Economic Impact Models

This site, maintained by Michigan State University, provides useful information on determining the economic impact of tourism. There is a model that may be downloaded for use, but it is specific for Michigan.
