Oceans and Aquaculture Science

The mission of Aquaculture science is to conduct research and to transfer the latest technologies to the rapidly growing aquaculture industry. DFO scientists monitor wild and cultured stocks of finfish and shellfish for diseases and carry out research on the interactions between wild and cultures stocks.

They are also responsible for implementing regulations and carrying out inspections to ensure the health of Canada's wild and cultured fisheries resources.

The Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat

The Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS) coordinates the peer review of scientific issues for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The different Regions of Canada conduct their resource assessment reviews independently, tailored to regional characteristics and stakeholder needs. CSAS facilitates these regional processes, fostering national standards of excellence, and exchange and innovation in methodology, interpretation, and insight. CSAS works with the Regions to develop integrated overviews of issues in fish stock dynamics, ocean ecology and use of living aquatic resources, and to identify emergent issues quickly.

Fisheries Research

Fisheries Research provides the scientific basis for conservation and sustainable economic use of Canadian fishery resources. Scientists provide advice to the fishing industry on the status of fish stocks and on conservation objectives as well as provide information on marine ecosystem issues.

Hydrography

Hydrography is a science that deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of bodies of water and their adjacent coastal areas. The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) is responsible for the surveying, measuring, describing and charting of the physical features of Canada's oceans, seas, rivers and lakes. The data are then used to produce navigational charts, tide and current tables as well as sailing directions for Canadians.

Environmental Science

Environmental Science's mandate involves the implementation of research programs related to the conservation and protection of aquatic habitats. This research involves the monitoring of chemical, physical and biological conditions that affect the aquatic environment such as the effect of toxic chemicals and physical disturbances of habitat.
