Habitat Impacts

Scientific staff of the Habitat Impacts Section provide biological expertise in the areas of fish population dynamics, and primary and secondary productivity. Research is carried out, both at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) (A bilingual version of this site will soon be provided by Fisheries and Oceans Canada) and at other lake and river study sites in central Canada, on issues involving disruptions to fish habitat caused by industrial and municipal effluents and by physical alterations. There is broad recognition of the expertise within this Section, as demonstrated by the requests for staff involvement in the Fraser River Action Plan, major freshwater habitat restoration projects in Europe, revisions to regulations pertaining to metal mines, validating the ecological relevance of screening tests for endocrine disrupting chemicals, evaluating contamination of freshwater fisheries by mercury and other metals, and the Lake Malawi project in Africa.
