1996 Census Electronic Area Profiles

The 1996 Census Electronic Area Profiles provide a statistical overview of Canada, presenting most of the univariate census variables for various levels of geography, including the following:

The data for the census variables were collected from a 20% sample of the population, with the exception of the data for the Age, Sex and Marital Status variables, which were collected from the total population.

Users of the 1996 Electronic Area Profile data should be aware that not all 1996 Census geographic areas or counts are comparable to those of other censuses because of changes made to the areas and to census concepts or classification systems. Changes in census geographic areas can be attributed to modifications in geographic boundaries, names or concepts. Changes to census counts can be caused by modifications to census concepts which relate to variables, such as the modification made to the family concept in 2001.
