Aquaculture

Aquaculture, the cultivation of aquatic life, is an established practice in many parts of the world. In Canada, aquaculture was first used to enhance natural stocks, however, it is now a large-scale commercial industry across the country providing direct and indirect economic benefits to many local and regional economies. All ten provinces and the Yukon Territory currently have a stake in commercial aquaculture and interest is increasing in the Northwest Territories. Aquaculture production in 2001 accounted for 10.7% of total fish production in Canada.

Commercial aquaculture production dates to the 1950s, when trout and oysters were the species of interest. Over the past 20 years, commercial production has expanded to include several salmon species and mussels. The information presented here, provided by Statistics Canada, covers the years 1986 to 2004 and provides information on volume and value of aquaculture production by species and by province and territory. For the period 1997-2004, information on the value added (economic contribution) of this industry has been provided by Statistics Canada.
