The CANMET Energy Technology Centre - Ottawa (CETC-O) works with industry, trade and professional associations, utilities, universities, and other levels of government to develop and deploy leading-edge technologies in the areas of residential, commercial and industrial energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, and transportation energy technologies.

CETC-O was formed in January 1996 as part of Natural Resources Canada's reorganization under the government-wide Program Review initiative. It incorporates the CANMET Energy Research Laboratories and the former Energy Efficiency and Alternative Energy divisions. CETC-O reflects the department's renewed mandate to focus on science and policy linkages for the sustainable development and use of Canada's resources. Federal funds are provided in part by the Program on Energy R&D (PERD).

Eligibility Criteria

Through partnerships and strategic alliances, CETC-O works with:

  • industry;
  • trade and professional associations;
  • utilities;
  • universities; and
  • other levels of government.

Eligible Activities

Develop and deploy leading-edge technologies in the areas of :

  • energy efficiency
  • renewable energy, and
  • sustainable transportation systems and fuels.

Eligibility criteria vary by program.

Summary

CETC-O's objectives are to secure environmental, economic and social benefits while fostering the wise use of energy and an increased use of alternative energy sources. The Centre emphasizes the development and commercialization of innovative technologies. Through collaboration with its partners, CETC-O assists Canadian businesses to be competitive in domestic and global markets while contributing to economic growth and job creation. CETC-O provides leadership in its technology areas through laboratory-based R&D and contract and contribution programs.

CETC-O programs are:

  • Clean Electric Power Generation Program;
  • Buildings Group;
  • Community Energy Systems;
  • Energy Technologies for High Temperature Processes;
  • Federal Industrial Boiler Program - FIBP;
  • Industry Energy Research and Development Program (IERD);
  • Processing and Environmental Catalysis Program;
  • Renewable Energy Technologies Program - RETP;
  • Transportation Energy Technologies - TRANSET.

These programs are supported by a Characterization Laboratory and a Business Development Office.
