Canadian Trade-marks Database

Industry Canada (IC)

Last Verified: 2006-10-16

The Canadian Trade-marks Database provides access to trade-mark records in Canada. Registration information includes the mark, dates, designs if applicable, the Vienna Code, wares and services, ownership information and more. This database is updated weekly.

Summary

Benefit to Canadians

Companies can use this searchable online data to make sound business decisions such as whether to purchase goods or licence a franchise. Canadian entrepreneurs can gather competitive intelligence on competitors, conduct research in a market segment as well as identify new business opportunities and partners. It can also help you prevent legal issues such as infringement of an existing mark or design.

Contents

This database contains all active and many inactive marks that were either applied-for or registered pursuant to the current Trade-marks Act or former trade-mark legislation since 1865. The database also includes all trade-marks which were cancelled, expunged, abandoned or refused after 1979, and some, but not all marks which were cancelled, expunged, abandoned or refused prior to 1979.

The database also includes additional words and designs which are not by definition trade-marks, but that are protected by the Trade-marks Act or other related legislation. These are prohibited marks for which public notice has been given pursuant to Section 9 of the Act. Also included are plant variety denominations granted pursuant to the Plant Breeders' Rights Act, the Symbols and Badges of the Boy Scouts of Canada and the Girl Guides of Canada, marks of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Canadian Nurses Association. Furthermore, geographical indications for wines and spirits which have been entered on the list or for which protection has been sought are also part of the database.

Searching

Searching can be done by application or registration number, current and previous owners, description, wares, services, Vienna Code, by date and status. There are help files on the database to guide you through the options. Find out who owns a trade-mark.
