BIO LIBRARY NEWSLETTER

Volume 4, Number 1 September 2006

From the Editors

In this issue we’ll talk about the e-journal deals that the Council of Fisheries & Oceans Librarians (COFOL) negotiated with mega-publishers Elsevier and Springer. Essentially, this means that BIO Library users now have online access to more journals than ever!

The frequency of our newsletter has changed and we’ll talk about that too.

Improved access to e-journals

Summary of deals

During the summer and fall of 2005, COFOL negotiated major subscription arrangements with Elsevier and Springer. These are department-wide deals that give all DFO users increased online access to journals. What this means for BIO Library users is this:

For Elsevier journals

• Online access to 67 titles instead of 42
• Access back to 1995 instead of current year only

For Springer journals

• Online access to 59 subscribed titles instead of 23
• Access back to 1997 instead of current year only
• Access from volume 1- 1997 for a set of 97 journals in the Environmental Sciences category
• Additional free access to over 1000 Springer journals

How to access these journals

Two lists of online journals are available on the library’s home page.

Click here for a list of journals that only BIO Library users can access. This list reflects BIO’s individual subscriptions and may include some of the nationally negotiated titles.

Click here for a list of journals that all DFO users can access. This is the new DFO virtual library site that provides access to the journals negotiated on a department-wide basis.

Remote access to the Elsevier and Springer titles is possible. See library staff for instructions and procedures.

We hope to continue these deals in the future and pursue similar deals with other major publishers as well.

Reduced frequency for newsletter

Early in 2006 we lost access to the free, in-house translator who translated our newsletter for us. Because we now must pay for translation services, we will reduce the frequency of our newsletter to a maximum of 2 issues a year.
