Summary
Authority
As Canada's sole note-issuing authority, the Bank of Canada is responsible for the design, production, distribution and withdrawal of Canadian bank notes.
Bank Notes in Circulation
Currently, there are two different bank notes in circulation:
-
the Birds of Canada Series, designed with enhanced security features to counter developments in colour-copier technology;
-
the Canadian Journey Series, the newest one, distinguished by new and enhanced security features, world-class designs, and a tactile feature to help the blind and visually impaired identify the different denominations.
Security
Canadians can protect themselves from losses due to counterfeiting by becoming familiar with and using the security features. Both series have their unique features. For more details, please visit the Bank Notes - Counterfeiting Prevention page of the Bank of Canada's Web.
