The Border Information Service - BIS is a computerized, 24-hour telephone service that automatically answers all incoming calls and provides general customs information.  With the help of a touch-tone telephone, clients can hear recorded information. If you are calling during office hours and need additional information on a particular topic, you can press "0" to speak to an agent.

Eligibility Criteria

Not applicable.

Summary

BIS provides information on various Customs topics, in both official languages, including:

  • personal and commercial importations and exportations, travellers' exemptions;
  • commercial as well as personal postal information;
  • trade agreements;
  • currency exchange rate information;
  • residency information.

Clients who call from a rotary-dial telephone will not be able to hear the BIS recorded information.  However, if the call is placed during office hours, it will be transferred directly to an agent.
