The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, James Bezan, Wayne Easter, Roger Gaudet, Denise Poirier-Rivard, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

 

Acting Members present: Nathan Cullen for Charlie Angus.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Labour Congress: David Bennett, National Director, Health, Safety and Environment Department. Canadian Veterinary Medical Association: Keith Campbell, President. As an Individual: Ann Clark, Associate Professor. Alberta Food Processors' Association: Ted Johnston, President & Chief Executive Officer. Canadian Health Coalition: Michael McBane, National Coordinator. Atlantic Veterinary College: Tim Ogilvie, Dean, Chair, Expert Committee on Animal Genomics, Biotechnology and Reproduction, Canadian Agri-Food Research Council.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, December 10, 2004, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-27, An Act to regulate and prohibit certain activities related to food and other products to which the Acts under the administration of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency apply and to provide for the administration and enforcement of those Acts and to amend other Acts in consequence.
 

Ann Clark, David Bennett, Ted Johnston, Michael McBane, Keith Campbell and Tim Ogilvie made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
