Canada Revenue Agency

Last Verified: 2005-08-24

The Canada Revenue Agency's mandate flows from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency Act, enacted on November 1, 1999. In delivering its mandate, the CRA:

  • collects revenues and administers tax laws for the federal government and for certain provinces and territories;
  • delivers certain social and economic benefit programs to Canadians, through the tax system.

The CRA oversees various tax programs and collects federal and provincial income taxes, the goods and services tax and harmonized sales tax (GST/HST), Canada Pension Plan contributions and Employment Insurance premiums, as well as excise taxes. The Agency administers the Canada Child Tax Benefit, GST/HST credits, and numerous provincial and territorial benefit and credit programs, which contribute to the economic and social well-being of Canadians.

The CRA's mission is to promote compliance with tax legislation and regulations through communication, quality service, and responsible enforcement, thereby contributing to the economic and social well-being of Canadians. The CRA focuses on two strategic outcomes:

(1) Tax Services: Taxpayers meet their obligations and Canada's revenue base is protected.

(2) Benefits Programs: Eligible families and individuals receive timely and correct benefit payments contributing to the integrity of Canada's income security system.
