New Land Purchase Program

Eligible producers may make application to the Agricultural Development Board (ADB) to participate in the New Land Purchase Program. Under this program, the ADB may purchase eligible land on behalf of the applicant and will lease it to the applicant for a period of up to 5 years. In return, the client promises to pay annual lease payments to the ADB, which are equivalent to the provincial lending rate effective at the time of lease approval. The successful applicant must agree to purchase the land from the ADB before the termination of the lease for the price originally paid by the Board.

Eligible land under this program:

  1. Has not had any agricultural crop produced and harvested from that land during the previous five years. The only exception is land that has been solely used during the previous five years as unimproved forage land. "Unimproved forage land" means land which may have been used for pasture or hay production, but has not been improved by seeding, draining, fertilizing, brush or weed control during the previous five years.

  2. Must be intended for the production of crops that contribute to the Strategic Directions of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture (AFA) as described in a five year Crop Development and Land Management Plan prepared by the applicant. In the event that applications exceed the available funding, priority will be given to potatoes and rotational crops; feed grain; and horticulture crops that are not eligible under the Perennial Crop Establishment Loan Program.

  3. In the opinion of the NB Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture, is suitable for the production of the intended crops described in the Crop Development and Land Management Plan; and

  4. Will be registered under the Farm Land Identification Program (FLIP), or in the case of uncleared land, be eligible for registration under FLIP after clearing.

Applications must be complete and received by the ADB. These applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of the Board's decision in writing. Successful applicants must indicate their acceptance in writing within 30 days of receiving the offer and failure to do so may result in the offer being withdrawn.
