What is the Order of New Brunswick?

Established in December 2000, the Order of New Brunswick is the highest honour of the Province of New Brunswick. The object of the Order of New Brunswick is to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement and who have made outstanding contributions to the social, cultural or economic well-being of New Brunswick and its residents.

Who is eligible for the Order of New Brunswick?

• Any Canadian citizen who is a present or former long-term resident of New Brunswick is eligible for nomination to the Order of New Brunswick .

• Individuals who have contributed significantly to the social, cultural and/or economic wellbeing of New Brunswick and its residents by demonstrating excellence and achievement in a given area.

• A maximum of 10 individuals may be invested with the Order of New Brunswick annually.

• Elected representatives presently serving in the House of Commons, the Senate, the Provincial Legislature and judges of any court are not eligible for nomination.

Will the Order be conferred posthumously?

The Order of New Brunswick may be conferred posthumously if an individual's name has been approved for membership prior to that individual's death and, in exceptional circumstances, in respect of one individual who is nominated after his or her death.

Who can nominate someone for the Order of New Brunswick?

Anyone may nominate an individual, keeping in mind that the Order of New Brunswick recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the social, culture and/or economic well-being of New Brunswick and its residents.

How do I nominate someone?

Simply detach and complete the attached nomination form; or write, telephone or fax the Order of New Brunswick , Office of Protocol and you will be sent a nomination form. You can also visit our Web site at: http://www.gnb.ca (Keyword: ONB)

Please be advised to ask several other people to send in letters supporting your nomination. However, only one nomination form is required for each nominee.

How are the recipients chosen?

An independent group called the Order of New Brunswick Advisory Council recommends the appointment of members to the Order of New Brunswick each year after considering all the nominations received. There are no fixed quotas or categories, but there is a maximum number of 10 appointments annually. If your nominee is not chosen this year, you are welcome to submit the nomination again.

Who is on the New Brunswick Advisory Council?

• The Chairperson, appointed by the Executive Council
• The Chief Justice of New Brunswick (alternating with Queen's Bench)
• The Clerk of the Executive Council
• The President of a provincially funded University (rotation), and
• Three to five other members from the community who are appointed by the Executive Council

What does the New Brunswick Advisory Council do?

The council reviews the nominations and puts forward names recommended for membership to the Order of New Brunswick .

What do members of the Order of New Brunswick receive?

At a formal ceremony the Lieutenant Governor, as Chancellor of the Order of New Brunswick , and the Premier of the Province of New Brunswick will present each recipient with a medal in the form of a stylized purple violet, the provincial floral emblem, bearing the shield of arms of New Brunswick surmounted by the Crown.

The medal is worn with a red, gold, and blue ribbon. They also receive a lapel pin and a certificate. Members of the order are entitled to use the initials O.N.B., after their names.
