On October 4, 2003 Premier Gordon Campbell appointed me to conduct
an independent, comprehensive review of the province's response to
the 2003 wildfires. The purpose of the review is to determine what
can be learned from this year's experience and make recommendations
for the future. Specifically, I have been requested to review a full
range of issues relevant to prevention, planning and response. This will be a full and open review, and I am expecting to report back to the government by February 15, 2004 in order to ensure that lessons learned can be applied to next year's forest fire season. Over the coming months, my team and I will be consulting with a broad range of stakeholders and seeking the input of affected residents and communities. Our objective is to provide for meaningful and extensive public input.
