Automated Flight Following

Starting 2006, the BC Forest Service will be moving in three stages to adopt an Automated Flight Following (AFF) standard for all aircraft (Rotary and Fixed) under hire to them in the province of BC.

The first stage, in 2006 will be a "Proof of Concept" year for certain areas around the province to monitor the flight following system utilizing various aircraft tracking devices. Some of the tracking devices being utilized for this test will meet the AFF specification and some will not.

* Installing a tracking device into an aircraft is NOT mandatory for this stage of the project.

In 2007, the BC Forest Service will move forward and make it a preferred, but not make it a mandatory requirement that all aircraft under hire are equipped with a tracking device that meets the AFF specifications in all rotary and fixed wing aircraft. Upon hire, aircraft with tracking devices that meet this specification will be considered the carrier of choice.

* Installing a tracking device into an aircraft is NOT mandatory for this stage of the project.

In 2008, all aircraft under hire to the BC Forest Service must have a tracking device installed that meets the AFF specification. The BC Forest Service may not be able to complete a hire contract with carriers that do not follow this standard.

* In 2008 it is mandatory that all aircraft under hire to the BC Forest Service be equipped with a tracking device that meets the AFF specifications on this final stage of the project.

Carriers and vendors may download the AFF specifications in PDF format.

Note: The BC Forest Service will not recommend a specific vendor's tracking device. Carriers are asked to consult tracking-device vendors in the avionics industry to ensure their device of choice meets AFF specifications.
