Intergovernmental Forum on Sustainable Development for Mining, Minerals and Metals

Fall 2006 Meeting
Geneva: October 18–20, 2006, Room XXVI

Ottawa — Delegates from more than 36 countries and multilateral agencies will be in Geneva for the second meeting of the Intergovernmental Forum on Sustainable Development for Mining, Minerals and Metals. The Forum is working to enhance the contribution of mining to sustainable development by promoting good governance.

During the meeting, delegates will review progress made in implementing the recommendations made at the 2005 inaugural meeting. They will review proposals on the elements of a national mining policy framework and information on how companies evaluate the risks of investing in different countries. The work will include an examination of the key elements of an environmental impact assessment. Delegates will also decide on how to best contribute to the 2010 review of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development of priorities for mining.

This Forum meeting is made possible by the generous contribution of a number of donors. The members wish to acknowledge the contribution of United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, the Canadian International Development Agency and Natural Resources Canada. A number of multilateral agencies also support the forum through their participation.
