Science Comes to Life in Quebec

Quebec — Christian Paradis, M.P. for Mégantic–L'Érable and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, kicked off National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) today in Quebec. He was joined by local students and scientists at the unveiling of the seismograph showcase at the Geological Survey of Canada. This showcase will include seismic readings and interactive Web features highlighting the history of major earthquakes in Canada.

Across the country, Canadians of all ages will be celebrating NSTW from October 13 to 22, 2006. The week provides a unique opportunity for the Government of Canada’s science-based departments to partner with local science centres and schools to showcase the exciting and innovative work of Canadian scientists.

“NSTW lays the groundwork for tomorrow by engaging today’s students and inspiring them to take up rewarding careers in science,” said Mr. Paradis. “Here in Quebec, we are proud of the work our scientists and researchers do, and this week is an opportunity for all of us to understand the contributions they make to our lives.”

“Natural Resources Canada is continuing a decade-long tradition of connecting children and the public with the wonders of science,” said the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources, whose department is responsible for NSTW. “The goal of this week is to encourage students to pursue a career in science and technology.”

NSTW features a wide variety of hands-on experiments and interesting presentations of fascinating scientific discoveries designed to engage Canadians. In Quebec, teachers will have the opportunity to learn about some dynamic methods for teaching about science and technology.

Other events across the country include interactive forest fire exhibits in Ontario, natural landscapes adventure hikes in British Columbia, the science behind rocks and fossils in Alberta and an interactive Web site with blogs from scientists in New Brunswick.

National Science and Technology Week advances the Government of Canada’s commitment to knowledge, innovation and productivity in the natural resources sectors — delivering real change and real results for Canadians.
