The Division produces four types of posters: commemorative, historical, operational, and research. Commemorative posters recognize the 100th and 125th anniversaries of significant events in the survey of Dominion Lands or in the office of the Surveyor General of Dominion Lands. Commemorative posters are also historical. An historical poster documents a significant map, plan, survey or the results of the research of a significant survey feature or event. It is not prepared to recognize a specific anniversary. An operational poster documents a current process, feature or features. A research poster documents records, and methods of searching for records, related to surveys of Dominion and Canada Lands.

There is no set poster production schedule. Posters are produced as anniversaries arrive, research is completed or a need arises, and as time permits.

Posters are usually the standard poster size of 25 inches wide by 39 inches high for the image and 27 inches by 41 inches overall including a one inch margin around the image. Posters are produced on an ink-jet printer on coated paper or photo glossy paper. As a result, the posters have the normal permanence features of ink-jet prints: - they are subject to water damage and will fade with time depending on exposure to sunlight and heat. Posters that the Division has mounted and framed behind glass have been on display away from sunlight for more than five years with no visible signs of fading. Unprotected posters displayed in sunlight or brightly lit rooms have faded significantly after one year. The poster commemorating the 100th anniversary of the survey of Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks was printed commercially and should be more permanent than the ink-jet prints.

Many posters are double posters. In other words they have a front and a back and are available in two formats: with the front and back together on a single sheet (double-side), or as separate, single-side posters. The commercially printed poster commemorating the 100th anniversary of the survey of Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks is available only in double-side format.
