National Forest Week Opening Ceremony

CFS is participating with Province in the opening ceremony for National Forest Week and the planting of the 200 millionth tree. Bruce Pike will be speaking on behalf of CFS.

Tree Planting Ceremony
Atlantic Forestry Centre
Corner Brook, NL
Fourteen native trees will be planted in districts across Newfoundland and Labrador. NRCan and CFS-AFC will be noted as a supporter at each planting. Each site will have a permanent plaque installed to commemorate the longstanding partnership between NRCan, CFS-AFC, and the NL Department of Natural Resources.
CFS-AFC will hold our own formal ceremony at the Forestry Centre in Corner Brook on September 26. We will invite our partners and members of the community to attend.

AFC Tour and Forestry Breakfast (invited guests only)
After the ceremony, our guests will go on a tour of the Atlantic Forestry Centre and then attend forestry breakfast being put on jointly by AFC and the Western Newfoundland Model Forest.

Book Reading by Marie Resmer
Newfoundland and Labrador
The Province has organized a book tour for Marie Resmer author of CFS supported children’s books such as “Forests of the Nation.” Ms. Resmer will be doing book readings in arts and culture centres and schools in St. John’s, Clarenville, Gander, Corner Brook, and Labrador.
NRCan and CFS-AFC has donated over 1000 copies of these books as well as posters to be handed out to students. Each venue will also have a mounted version of the poster donated by NRCan to commemorate the reading.

Over 300 invited students will be arriving at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre for this event. It is a multi-stop tour to teach students about forestry and CFS-AFC will be organizing one of the stops where we will demonstrate insect trapping and tree identification.
