The purpose of the First Nations Forestry Program is to improve the economic conditions in status First Nations communities with full consideration of the principals of sustainable forest management.

The First Nations Forestry Program (FNFP) supports the unique relationship between forests and First Nations by providing a means of creating sustainable communities and economic self-sufficiency.

This innovative, highly successful Government of Canada initiative involves First Nations in program management at the national and provincial and territorials levels, and increase the capacity of First Nations to participate in sustainable forest management and the forest-based industry.

This translates into greater access to existing employment opportunities in the forest sector. This capacity-building program enables First Nations to acquire or enhance the knowledge and skills needed to achieve sustainable forest management on-and off-reserve.
