The purpose of the First Nations Forestry Program is to improve the economic
conditions in status First Nations communities with full consideration
of the principals of sustainable forest management.
The First Nations Forestry Program (FNFP) supports the unique relationship
between forests and First Nations by providing a means of creating
sustainable communities and economic self-sufficiency.
This innovative, highly successful Government of Canada initiative
involves First Nations in program management at the national and provincial and territorials levels, and increase the capacity
of First Nations to participate in sustainable forest management
and the forest-based industry.
This translates into greater access to existing employment opportunities
in the forest sector. This capacity-building program enables
First Nations to acquire or enhance the knowledge and skills
needed to achieve sustainable forest management on-and off-reserve.
