The Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre (HJFFC) is a cooperative
venture which brings together various government agencies, educational
institutions and forestry associations that have a common interest
in forestry. The Forestry Centre offers a wide range of forest research,
management and teaching expertise that cannot be
matched anywhere in Canada.
This Centre of Excellence in Forestry consists of some twenty buildings
with over one half million square feet of space. The Centre is located
in Fredericton, New Brunswick (Canada) on a 28 hectare site adjacent
to the University of New Brunswick woodlot.
A Chronology of Key Dates in Forestry
at the Atlantic Forestry Centre
The federal Natural Resources Canada, department that includes
Canadian Forest Service-Atlantic Forestry Centre, has a major research
facility/greenhouse/tree nursery complex at the HJFFC. These facilities
are part of
a national network of research facilities maintained by the Canadian
Forest Service.
The University of New Brunswick's Tweeddale Centre for Industrial
Forest Research is also located at the HJFFC. The Tweeddale Centre
features three areas of research and development excellence: the
Wood Science and Technology Centre, a regional forest nursery soils
testing lab and a forest engineering research facility.
I n addition, this industrially-oriented centre provides services
ranging from wood product development and wood component design
to soil analysis and forest road engineering. The Centre complements
the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management's research
and teaching facilities, established in 1908, on the Fredericton
campus of the University of New Brunswick.
The Maritime Forest Ranger School MFRS) facilities form an important
part of the HJFFC. The School was established in 1946 and is a cooperative
effort of the Maritime provinces and the wood-using industries.
The primary objective of the MFRS is to train people to become
forest technicians. The MFRS also has a stimulating continuing education
program and a training sawmill to introduce new technologies and
provide specialized training in forestry and sawmilling.
The central office and related support facilities of the provincial
Department of Natural Resources & Energy are located in three
buildings at the HJFFC. The facilities also include space for supporting
laboratories, a fire command centre, central stores, mineral core
storage, and vehicle maintenance.
