Open Files can be maps or reports. The maps may be coloured or black and white, simple or complicated. The reports can be unedited manuscript material from a research project, or relevant supporting data that are referred to in formally published reports. Open File publications have had no formal quality control or scientific editing. The publication is geared towards specialists (mining industry, land-use planning, geoscience students) rather than the general public.
Current Research articles are short reports (5000 words or less) on ongoing projects comparable in scope and subject matter to those appearing in scientific journals. Current Research articles have had a lower level of formal quality control and scientific editing. The publication is geared towards specialists (mining industry, land-use planning, geoscience students) rather than the general public.
Bulletins are final geological reports on a research project with either a thematic or geographic focus. They can be either a monograph (one report), or a compendium (series of articles), and may include A-series maps. Bulletins have undergone a thorough formal quality control and scientific editing. The publication is geared towards specialists (mining industry, land-use planning, geoscience students) rather than the general public.
Miscellaneous Reports can be posters or reports that do not fit the category of bulletin. Miscellaneous reports have undergone a thorough formal quality control and scientific editing. The publication is geared mainly for the use of the general public.
A-Series maps are complex, multicoloured, geological maps. A-Series Maps have undergone a thorough formal quality control and scientific editing. The publication is geared towards specialists (mining industry, land-use planning, geoscience students) rather than the general public.
Most CCRS publications are digital versions of scientific articles and conference proceedings that are published in scientific journals. In some cases, the version posted on GeoPub is the one submitted to the publisher that has only undergone an internal or external critical review. In other cases, it is the final version released by the publisher that has gone through formal quality control and scientific editing. The publications are geared towards specialists (environmental monitoring, agriculture, geology, land-use planning, mapping, hydrology, remote sensing students) rather than the general public.
Papers are final geological reports on a research project with either a thematic
or geographic focus. They can be either a monograph (one report), or a compendium
(series of articles), and may include A-series maps. GSC papers have undergone
a thorough formal quality control and scientific editing. The publication is
geared towards specialists (mining industry, land-use planning, geoscience students)
rather than the general public. These publications are no longer being produced,
they have been incorporated into the Bulletin series. However, copies of some
of these publications, produced before the incorporation, are still available
for sale.
