Download problems: frequently asked questions

1. I am using Internet Explorer, why can't I start the download?

If you are getting an error, similar to the ones shown below:

  • Windows cannot access the folder.
  • Connection to the server cannot be accessed.
  • Page cannot be displayed.
  • Cannot browse the folder...
  • Connection timed out...

Or if you are gettng no error message at all - it just won't connect - then you may be behind a proxy server or firewall that restricts or even prevents FTP transactions. If you are downloading through a corporate Internet connection, this is almost certainly the case.

Fixes:

  1. Make sure that your browser or FTP utility is configured for "Passive Mode" FTP:
    • Close all browser windows.
    • Go to Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options.
    • Click the Advanced tab.
    • Check the option Use Passive FTP (for compatibility with some firewalls and DSL modems)
    • Click Apply.
    • Try to download the file again

  2. If you're NOT using an FTP utility, configure your browser for web-based FTP by doing the following:
    • Close all browser windows.
    • Go to Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options.
    • Click the Advanced tab.
    • Check the option Use Web Based FTP (if you see it).
    • Click Apply.
    • Try to download the file again.

  3. Try reversing the setting for "Enable folder view for FTP sites":
    • Close all browser windows.
    • Go to Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options.
    • Click the Advanced tab.
    • Find the option Enable folder view for FTP sites.
    • If it is checked, uncheck it. If it is unchecked, then check it.
    • Click Apply.
    • Try to download the file again.

  4. It is possible that your Internet security setting has been set to a level that restricts your ability to download from our secure FTP link.
    • Close all browser windows.
    • Go to Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options.
    • Click the Security tab.
    • Click Internet.
    • Using the Default button, temporarily set your security to Medium-Low or Low.
    • Click Apply, then OK. Be sure to set your Internet security settings back to the original state when you are finished downloading.

  5. Your firewall may have some restrictions that are preventing you from downloading from our secure server.

You will not be able to FTP from our public server if your IP and host name are not properly configured in your DNS. Our FTP server must be able to reverse lookup your host name, not just your IP address.

Please contact your IT staff for more information on your firewall.

  6. If you still cannot download the file, please contact us at GeoPub@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca and we will be glad to help you resolve your download issues.

2. I am using Internet Explorer, why does Winzip give me a blank window when I try to open my downloaded file?
Why isn't the zip file I downloaded saved in my directory?

  • Winzip gives you a blank window when you try to open the downloaded file
  • The zip file you downloaded isn't saved in your selected directory

Viewing large images at best quality

This Web site may provide links to very large detailed images that may exceed the browser window size even if the window is maximized. Some browsers have the capability of scaling these large images to fit in the browser window, but unfortunately this reduces the quality of the image and legibility of the information. If an image changes size to fill the browser window as the window is resized, the scaling feature has been enabled.

The scaling feature should be disabled to view the image at best quality, albeit requiring use of browser window scrollbars to view the entire image. To disable the image scaling:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer:
Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced, scroll down to the Multimedia section, and uncheck the Enable Automatic Image Resizing option.

  • Firefox:
Select Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General and uncheck the Resize larger images to fit in the browser window option in the Browsing section.
