    f) Research Support:

The EMMIC will support the current research needs of the ETB and MTB. Those needs are fluid, depending on their current and long-term projects. The Reference Librarians are the first point of contact with researchers. They will provide suggestions for the development of the collection for specific projects. In addition, they will provide advice regarding sources of information, databases, journals, patents, etc.

  2. Types of materials

Journals, monographs, conference proceedings, reports, statistics, publications in series related to the above subjects. Online access to documents or services is provided when available.

Wherever possible and if there is a PURL (Persistent URL), we will collect documents in electronic formats and make the publication available through our Multilis catalogue.

EMMIC will not collect patents or standards. We will however provide the information required for the individual to purchase these materials.

  3. Selection process:

The Collection Development Librarian will review catalogues, brochures, etc and select materials and services to support the information and research needs of the Energy and Minerals & Metals Sectors. Any client or staff member may recommend items for purchase, however all requests are subject to review by the professional library staff.

    Gifts:

Relevant gifts are welcome, with the understanding that the staff will determine whether or not the items will be added to the collection. Some of the criteria we use to evaluate donations are

    1. Age. We prefer items that are less than 5 year old.
    2. Relevance. Do they fit into the mandate of our collection?
    3. Long term value. Some items have lasting value, others are only useful for a few years. We serve the current research needs of our clients (MMS and ES) and are a depository for 2 copies of NRCan publications.

Collection Maintenance:

  • Weeding:

The collections are to be weeded periodically to maintain the relevance of the collections, to ensure their currency and to make efficient use of space.
