National Energy Board
National Energy Board

The National Energy Board is an independent federal agency that regulates several aspects of Canada's energy industry. Its purpose is to promote safety, environmental protection and economic efficiency in the Canadian public interest within the mandate set by Parliament in the regulation of pipelines, energy development and trade.

Energy Policy Sector
The Energy Policy Sector enhances the economic and environmental well-being of Canada by fostering the sustainable development and use of the nation’s energy resources to meet the present and future needs of Canadians. The mission of the Energy Policy Sector is “A Better Energy Future for Canada”. The scope of the Energy Policy Sector’s responsibilities includes oil and gas, electricity, uranium and nuclear, alternative transportation fuels, and renewable energy. The sector is also responsible for working with key industry sectors to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions.

Electricity Resources Branch
The Electricity Resources Branch is organized of the:

  • Nuclear Energy Division,
    The Nuclear Energy Division provides information, analysis and advice on nuclear energy and the Canadian nuclear industry.

  • Uranium and Radioactive Waste Division
    The Uranium and Radioactive Waste Division provides information, analysis and advice on the uranium industry, one of Canada's leading export industries, and on the management of radioactive waste in Canada.

  • Renewable and Electrical Energy Division.
    The Renewable and Electrical Energy Division provides information, analysis and advice in furthering the development and use of renewable energy and in supporting federal interests in the electricity sector.

  • The mandates of these three divisions all interface with the electricity sector in Canada.

Petroleum Resources Branch
The Petroleum Resources Branch is organized of the Oil Division, the Natural Gas Division and the Frontier Lands Management Division. The mandates of the three divisions are related in that they deal with petroleum.

Energy Policy Branch
The Energy Policy Branch (EPB) takes the lead on federal energy policy and international energy issues, environmental issues pertaining to energy, sustainable development and other long-term strategies, fiscal analysis, forecasting and other cross-cutting energy issues. EPB provides the linkages between the efficiency, resources and technology branches within the Energy Sector when issues are of a general nature or require central coordination.

Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD)
OERD is the Government of Canada's co-ordinator of energy research and development activities, with the exception of nuclear fission energy.

Energy Technology and Programs Sector
The Energy Technology and Programs Sector support research and development in developing and delivering knowledge and technology-based programs for the sustainable production and use of Canada’s energy supply. The sector also plays a leadership role in helping Canadians save energy costs while addressing the challenges of climate change and in supporting energy efficiency and the development of alternative fuels.

CANMET Energy Technology Centre (CETC)
CETC develops and delivers knowledge- and technology-based programs for the sustainable production and use of Canada's energy supply.

Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE)
Canada's centre of excellence for energy efficiency and alternative fuels information, is playing a dynamic leadership role in helping Canadians save millions of dollars in energy costs while addressing the challenges of climate change.

International Energy Agency (IEA)
The IEA acts as energy policy advisor for its 26 member countries in their effort to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for their citizens. IEA conducts a broad programme of energy research, data compilation, publications and public dissemination of the latest energy policy analysis and recommendations on good practices.

Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
OPEC produces a variety of publications, including research about the oil and gas industry. The site provides a glossary of climate change terms, FAQs and a library offering various reports.

United Nations Environment Programme - Division of Technology, Industry and Economics- Energy Branch
UNEP Energy activities help partners incorporate environmental factors into their energy-related decisions. UNEP provides information, develops tools for decision makers, improves analytical and policy skills, and conducts pilot and demonstration projects. Most activities are focused on developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
