Negotiator appointed for discussions with insurance industry (06/10/19)

FREDERICTON (CNB) - A Fredericton lawyer has been named as the lead negotiator for the upcoming discussions with the insurance industry, Justice and Consumer Affairs Minister T.J. Burke announced today.

Bill Anderson, a long-time government litigator, has been retained and will begin work immediately.

"Mr. Anderson is an experienced negotiator and I know that he will achieve the government's goal of having the best auto insurance coverage and the best price for New Brunswickers," Burke said. "We committed to securing fair treatment for New Brunswick policy holders within 60 days of taking office. This is a priority for government and for the people of New Brunswick."

The minister said Anderson has been given the mandate move quickly on the insurance file.

The next step in the process will be a series of discussions with representatives of the insurance industry on protocol and terms of reference for the negotiations. Government has committed to seeking the elimination of existing territories and the elimination of discrimination based on gender when evaluating consumer risk.

William A. Anderson, Q.C.

William A. Anderson, Q.C. graduated from the University of New Brunswick Law School in 1971. He practiced law in Saint John with a private law firm until 1982. He then joined the Legal Services Branch of the Office of the Attorney General for the Province, where he served as an advisor to the Departments of Health, Environment and Transportation. He also represented the Province in a wide range of litigation matters.

Anderson is a member of the Law Society of the Province and has been an active member of the Canadian Bar Association, serving as Chairperson of the Provincial Criminal Law Subsection. He later served as President of the New Brunswick Branch. He also served as a member of the National Executive of the Canadian Bar Association for a two year period.

Anderson has participated in the New Brunswick Bar Admission Course and has delivered presentations for the Continuing Legal Education Program as well as for the Canadian Institute on subjects relating to litigation, family law and environmental law.

Anderson's skill and dedication as a distinguished legal practitioner was recognized in 1997 when he was appointed Queen's Counsel.

In the past several years, he has acted on behalf of the Province in several matters relating to insurance, both before the Public Utilities Board and the New Brunswick Insurance Board.
