Fire
Occurrence Prediction (FOP) Models
Fire occurrence prediction (FOP) models, which predict the daily number
and location of forest fires, are an important component of the daily
planning process of any fire management agency. The Canadian Forest Service
has been conducting research in the development of FOP models for the
Canadian environment for the last 25 years. Two of these models, SPARKY,
for lightning-caused fires, and PEOPLE,
for human-caused fires, have been developed and tested by several provincial
fire management agencies over the years. When these models are used on
a daily basis, they provide estimates of the expected fire activity patterns
and potential areas of fire danger.
