Kindergarten registration to take place during October (06/10/10)

NB 1239

Oct. 10, 2006

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Registration for children who will start kindergarten in September 2007 is being held this month at elementary schools across New Brunswick, said Education Minister Kelly Lamrock.

"Starting school is an important time in a child's life," Lamrock said. "Registering early eases the transition into kindergarten from home or preschool and provides parents with an opportunity to participate in events that will help prepare their child for school."

Information sessions for parents will follow the registration period. During such sessions, parents will learn about the typical development of four-year-olds and ways they can encourage this development. They will be provided with information about the school and the kindergarten program, and given the opportunity to ask questions. Children will also have the chance to visit the school and become familiar with some of the staff and the surroundings.

"A good start to school is important to a child's future and school readiness is an important factor when it comes to succeeding at school," Lamrock said. "I encourage everyone who has a child going into kindergarten in September 2007 to register early so they and their child can be as ready as possible for the first day of school."

More information about kindergarten and when registration sessions will take place is available online at www.gnb.ca (Keyword: Education) or by contacting the nearest elementary school or school district office.
