"School Sports Week is intended to raise awareness of the values and needs of interscholastic athletics.

"There have been a number of studies published world-wide that show the positive impact sport and physical activity have on academic and non-academic goals. School physical education and school-organized intramural and extramural sports programs, along with community sports programs contribute to the fitness, healthy lifestyles, academics and citizenship of students.

"With the support of our partners in communities across the province, including those who make up the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association, the government is committed to promoting excellence and involvement in sport and to increasing the levels of wellness of New Brunswickers.

"We are committed to making sure every child, regardless of income or ability can experience the joy of healthy play. Our Charter for Change calls for a number of initiatives such as creating more opportunities for students to compete in provincial games, and the implementation of a Healthy Schools Act to ensure every school provides 150 minutes per week of physical activity.

"During School Sports Week, I extend my best wishes to all students who are participating in interscholastic athletics and thank the many volunteers who dedicate countless hours to shaping the skills, attitude and capabilities of high school athletes."
