FREDERICTON (CNB) - On Monday, Oct. 23, students and school library staff throughout New Brunswick will celebrate National Library Day, Education Minister Kelly Lamrock said today.
"Research demonstrates that student achievement increases with access to effective school libraries," Lamrock said. "School libraries matter and make a difference. They promote reading and literacy skills, as well as information skills, and provide the foundation for lifelong learning."
The aim of National School Library Day is to celebrate school libraries and to highlight the importance of school library programs in the education of our children.
"School libraries are a critical component of the education system, and we want to ensure that our school libraries fully play the role that they can play in the education of our children," the minister said. "Through our Charter for Change, we will establish five-year targets for strengthening our school and public libraries."
National School Library Day was first proclaimed in 2003 by Roch Carrier, National Librarian of Canada. The Canadian event coincides with International School Library Day, proclaimed by the International Association of School Librarianship in 1999.
