Abstract:

Objectives:
To apply and extend principles of experimental design, statistical analysis, modeling and inference to a wide range of silvicultural projects, contributing to the corporate target outcome of providing tools and strategies for enhanced timber production and protection.

Location:
Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay Districts

Key Deliverables:
Journal articles on modeling conifer biomass production following five stand tending measures in the boreal forest (lead W. Bell); and, modeling the incidence and severity of white pine blister rust in Ontario (lead T. Meyer). Modification of large-scale photosampling software to be used as a pilot inventory of remote forested areas (lead D. Pitt).

Expected Benefits:
Reduction in cost of remote forest resource inventory; better tools to assess forest vegetation management costs and white pine blister rust losses.

Sources of Funding:
Enhanced Timber Production and Protection Network; Knowledge and Information Synthesis Network, Ontario Living Legacy Trust (OLLT), OMNR; Tembec Inc.

Other Collaborators:
Tim Meyer, Wayne Bell, Sylvia Greifenhagen, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario Forest Research Institute

Nature of Other Collaborators' Involvement:
Field study sites, field personnel, data collection.
