Abstract:

Objectives:
To determine the impacts of thinning and site preparation techniques on environmental conditions and ecosystem processes (e.g., nutrient cycling) and subsequent regeneration success in mid-tolerant species; to consider physiological indicators for seedling fitness and competitive ability; to identify environmentally sustainable forestry practices for a mid-tolerant mixed-wood species; to determine influence of altered precipitation regimes under change on soil seed bank and subsequent regeneration within a mixed-wood forest.

Location:
Central Ontario

Key Deliverables:
Journal Articles- the effects of various forestry practices on white pine regeneration; overview of nutrient cycling in managed white pine ecosystem; leaf level response of planted eastern white pine seven years after intensive silvicultural treatments; soil and plant nutrient relationships in white pine seedlings under a shelterwood system; response of crop and non-crop vegetation to different degrees of overstory removal. Reports- effects of various forest management practices on vegetation and soil characteristics in a mixedwood ecosystem; effects of overstory thinning regimes and site preparation treatments on soil characteristics (water retention, nutrition).

Expected Benefits:

Sources of Funding:
Forest Ecosystem Processes Network

Other Collaborators:
Dr. Bill Parker, Ontario Forest Research Institute, Andreé Morneault, NE RSIS Vegetation Management Alternatives Program

Nature of Other Collaborators' Involvement:
Funding for sampling and for white pine physiology work.
