Infrastructure Management: Turkey Lakes Watershed

Study Leader: D. Allan Cameron
alcam@NRCan.gc.ca

Study Description:

This study provides coordination and infrastructure management for the multidisciplinary, multi-agency Turkey Lakes Harvesting Impacts Project. The project, established in 1997, is part of the larger Turkey Lakes Watershed (est. 1979) and focusses upon ecosystem response to harvesting at the stand and watershed level. It also addresses the issue of alternative silvicultural systems for tolerant hardwood stands, compares the impacts of partial cutting vs those of clearcutting for a broad range of ecosystem elements (site impacts, logging damage to residual trees and advance growth, site productivity, post-harvest vegetation succession and structure, stand dynamics, growth and yield, soil and hydrological processes, carbon sequestration, decomposition, songbird habitat and aquatic ecosystem responses.

This is a cooperative project of CFS GLFC, OMNR, Domtar, their agents Meakin Forestry Enterprises and Clergue Management Inc., with research participation that includes OMNR Central Region Science and Technology, OFRI, FERIC-East, York U, University of Western Ontario, University of Waterloo, (Department of the Environment - National Water Research Institute) DOE-NWRI, Atmospheric Environment Service) AES, (Canadian Wildlife Service) CWS, and (Department of Fisheries and Oceans - Great Lakes Laboratory of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences DFO-GLLFAS.

This study provides services for the benefit of all research participants in the project.
