Industrial Energy Audit Incentive

Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan's) Office of Energy Efficiency has a financial incentive to help industrial companies identify ways to increase energy efficiency, improve production processes and cut costs.

This incentive is designed to help defray the cost of hiring a professional energy auditor to conduct an on-site audit at an industrial facility. Funding is available for up to 50 percent of the cost of an energy audit, to a maximum of $5,000. This is an exclusive service for companies that are registered as Industrial Energy Innovators. Companies must have their Industrial Energy Audit Incentive applications approved by NRCan before beginning their audit.

Note: The deadline for submission of applications to the Industrial Energy Audit Incentive program is December 22, 2006. Once Natural Resources Canada has approved an application, the recipient will be required to complete their energy audit by March 31, 2007.

Benefits to industry

An energy audit identifies and evaluates energy management opportunities at a defined site. It focuses on specific areas of the site's energy system, such as natural gas boilers, steam distribution, motor systems, refrigeration, compressed-air and venting systems and related water and wastewater discharge issues.

This assessment represents an opportunity to:

  • find out how to reduce energy costs by a minimum of 5 to 15 percent, often with payback periods of less than two years
  • establish a baseline against which to compare future improvements
  • help kick-start a company energy management strategy

By using energy more efficiently, industry can become more competitive and help reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute to climate change.
