This information represents activities in the Earth Sciences Sector Programs (2002-2006). Please refer to Priorities for information on current Earth Sciences Sector Programs. See also: Groundwater Mapping Program.

Contact: Éric Boisvert (Project leader)

Abstract:

This project is defined as a series of activities intended to:

  1. implement collaboration and develop a mechanism to collect groundwater information;
  2. design and implement data management architecture and standards to store and exchange groundwater information through internal diffusion channels and national initiatives and provide linkage with external and internal partners; and
  3. deliver information in a usable form to governments, educators, practitioners, and the general public, either as digital data or outreach and education material.

Objectives:

  • Collate, assess, benchmark and analyze information from current groundwater monitoring; carry out an assessment of monitoring gaps; and implement a monitoring network of networks.

  • Provide an information management architecture to manage, manipulate, archive and deliver relevant information about aquifer and groundwater characteristics.

  • Improve access to information by providing information technology tools and offer opportunities for development of applications.

  • Improve information interchange between data producers / keepers in provinces, academia and other federal departments through collaborative agreements and exchange protocols.

  • Raise awareness and knowledge level of groundwater issues by adequate educational material for educators and relevant data sets for decision makers and groundwater practitioners.

  • Improve delivery mechanisms to groundwater users, formatted for their specific usage.

  • Partial participation in the communication and marketing strategy of the program, to promote both the program, and specially, the groundwater national database.
