Canada Road Safety Week 2006

Adopting safe driving practices saves lives and money, helps conserve fuel and benefits the environment. As part of Road Safety Week, May 15–21, Natural Resources Canada urges motorists to adopt safe and fuel-efficient practices by following these simple tips.

  1. Avoid aggressive driving. Aggressive driving increases fuel consumption by up to 39 percent and makes it more likely you’ll be involved in a serious accident.
  2. Reduce your speed. Slowing down to create more distance between your car and the one in front burns less fuel and gives you time to respond safely to dangerous situations.
  3. Avoid "jackrabbit" starts and "hard" stops. Smooth acceleration and deceleration helps save fuel and ensure safer roadways for you and surrounding vehicles.
  4. Keep your vehicle in good condition. Regular vehicle maintenance is an important part of being a safe driver. Checking your tire pressure once a month, keeping your brakes in good shape and following a regular maintenance schedule will save you money and fuel, and help ensure your vehicle is in safe operating condition.

Remember, every driver can make a difference when it comes to driving safely, saving money, conserving fuel and protecting the environment.
