How to Become an R-2000 Builder

Becoming an R-2000 builder is straightforward. It takes a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience to become familiar with the energy-efficient building practices of the R-2000 Standard, the R-2000 quality assurance process and administration. After being trained, builders sign a licence agreement with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to build R-2000 homes and use the R-2000 logo for promotional purposes.

Training and Licensing Requirements

In order to become and remain a licensed R-2000 builder, you must:

• Attend an R-2000 Builder Workshop ,an intensive two-day course taught by experienced R-2000 trainers, and pass the written exam with a minimum mark of 75 percent.
• Build an R-2000 demonstration home. When successfully completed, the house is certified and you are licensed as an R-2000 builder.
• Have an active, up-to-date licensing agreement with NRCan, giving you the right to use the R-2000 name and logo.
• Adhere to the responsibilities of R-2000 builders outlined by the R-2000 Standard.
• Build at least one R-2000 house every three years. If not, you must attend the full two-day R-2000 Builder Workshop to be reclassified as "active."
• Attend the R-2000 Builder Update Workshop every two years.
