ENERGY STAR®
– Qualifying Criteria for Scanners
All manufacturers of scanners are required to sign a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) with the United States Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) before they can sign an ENERGY STAR Administrative Arrangement with Natural
Resources Canada.
Definition
Scanner – categorized as an electro-optical device for converting
colour and black-and-white information into electronic images that can be stored,
edited, converted or transmitted primarily in a personal computing environment.
The intent of the program is to focus on widely used desktop scanners (e.g.
flat-bed, sheet-fed and film scanners); however, high-end office document management
scanners that meet the specifications may also qualify for the ENERGY STAR symbol.
Low-Power Mode – The lowest power state the scanner is designed
to enter after some period of inactivity, without actually turning off.
Default Time – The time period set by the manufacturer prior
to shipping that determines when the scanner will enter the low-power mode.
Enable – To set the power management feature of a given product
to activate the power-saving features automatically as specified in the product's
U.S. ENERGY STAR
Partnership Agreement with the manufacturer.

For specific testing protocols, please refer to the U.S. ENERGY STAR Web site.
Tests may be conducted on products bearing the ENERGY STAR symbol to determine
their compliance, and the Participant may be asked to voluntarily provide products
